My First Tennis Tournament

Bump day icon You may have seen on Instagram that I recently played in my first tennis tournament! Well, it wasn’t really an official tournament. It was more like a friendly get together for a doubles round robin, but to me, it was still a big deal!

I’ve been playing tennis for less than two years. Before that, I had never even picked up a tennis racquet, so I was starting from the absolute beginning. Originally, I only played for one hour a week in a private lesson. When my (fabulous) instructor insisted I was ready to join other ladies in a clinic, I reluctantly trusted her. And I’m glad I did, because I absolutely love the clinic! I now go twice a week, in addition to my lesson, and have met some wonderful women in the process.

Being a firm believer in pushing myself out of my comfort zone, I promised my instructor that I would sign up for a tournament by the end of 2014. So when she had one final spot for this tournament, she contacted me. I started to fret about it, and asked if I could sleep on it. But then that little voice inside me said to go for it. So I did! I committed to it then and there. No time like the present! I think the fact that I had a new Wonder Woman t-shirt that I was dying to debut had something to do with it too!=)

Being with a group of ladies that I already knew really helped with my nerves. However, when we started to play, it still took a while for me to settle down. I was missing shots I would normally get, which was very frustrating! I’m a chatty gal, especially when I’m nervous, and my partner and I really didn’t take the first game seriously. Accordingly, we got our asses whooped. Once my nerves calmed down, and I started to focus, my game got consistently better! My serves still need a lot of work, but I only double faulted once (that’s pretty damn good) and I held my own. In the end, I didn’t win, but I had a ton of fun, and it was totally worth it! I’ll definitely be signing up for the next one 🙂

It was super muggy that night, so after the matches were done, we cooled off Bajan style. There’s a rum shack court side, and we earned our drinks that night!

Rum Shack

Every tennis court needs a rum shack next door!
