Why You Should Be Using Cleansing Oil + How To Use It

When I was in Hong Kong a few months ago, I decided to purchase some cleansing oil. It’s a product that has gained a lot of popularity lately and since I was in one of the best cities to purchase beauty products, I felt inspired to take the leap. I was hoping to buy the highly recommended DHC Cleansing Oil, but decided on this one from Shu Uemura as the DHC product was sold out everywhere!

Cleansing Oil

Let me start by saying that I have combination skin and I live in a very humid environment. The thought of slathering oil on my face seemed like a horrible idea, but boy, was I wrong!  It leaves my skin feeling clean and gently removes even the toughest eye makeup. I don’t even need to follow up with eye makeup remover!

How It Works

When massaged into your skin, the gentle cleansing oil draws out and binds to impurities, allowing them to be rinsed away. What it doesn’t do is sink into your pores and cause greasy skin. It rinses off well, taking away all of the dirt and makeup, and leaving your skin clean, but not tight or overly dry.

Why You Should Use It

Cleansing oil is a gentle way of removing tough makeup without stripping your skin of essential oils. I use it year round, but a gentle cleanse is even more essential in the cold winter months when our skin is prone to drying out. Many of the oils on the market also have added benefits, such as antioxidants, whiteners (a very popular trend in Asia), or anti-acne components.

How to Use It

Cleansing oil is applied to dry skin. Yup, it sounds weird and feels even weirder when you first start using it. You’re literally applying oil all over your face! But stick with me, the benefits are worth it.

  1. Take three to four pumps of cleansing oil into your dry hands.
  2. Gently massage the oil all over your dry face, including the eyes to remove eye makeup.
  3. Wet your hands and massage your face, making the product milky. Continue to slowly add water and massage the cleanser into your face.
  4. Rinse face well.
  5. Pat dry and follow up with your favorite moisturizer, if desired.
